He owned a big house, a great car, a Lamborghini, the things that mattered. For nursing student Jake Althaus, running into mega music producer Adrian Donovan seemed like a dream come true. They got along, had similar interests, great chemistry, aspired both to be working men. In time they shared everything. A home, a dog, a future—even an HIV-positive diagnosis that to some would damn them to a life of loneliness. But when a cancer diagnosis upends their lives and threatens to destroy the reality of their existence, they will soon come face-to-face with the greatest question ever Does love conquer all? Of life, of love, of the inseparable bonds that tie two people together, The Beauty that Is Us tells the story of two men who must use their fractured pasts to keep their futures alive, and their presents from falling apart.

This is the kind of story that will stick in you mind long after you finished it. It deals with the sad subjects of illness and death, but it also shows the love and compassion that most of us have for the unfortunates. Although there is a committed relationship in the story, romance is not the main theme here and I'm glad that there was no explicit intimacy as that would have cheapen the story.

This book is a little similar to Edward Patterson's excellent story Look Away Silence although it wasn't as emotional since I didn't cry much. On the other hand, the main character in this story has a 'happy' ending for those who is afraid of an all depressing read.

Wow. This is a really great story of two, very well-drawn characters. While reading, I grew close to both of them, especially Jake, who was narrating the story. You find that Jake is a very deep character who feels a little lost and out of touch with his partner, Adrian. Their relationship is the crux of this story, and both the cracks and their strength shows a true-to-life relationship. And when Jake gets a cancer diagnosis, you see two men who deal with it in very real ways.

The writing is gorgeous and poetic, and I loved being in Jake's head throughout the novel. It's about the trials and tribulations that we go through as human beings and I'm glad I was along for the ride. It's a different sort of story to what I normally read - but I'm glad it is, because it's a great read. I'm also amazed at the research that must have gone into writing it - at no point did it feel like the medical-speak was forced or too derived.

Five stars. And a few sniffles. Bravo.
For those who love a story that doesn't keep to the usual script. Life is messy, cancer is messy and no one can say or do the right thing 24/7. It was refreshing to see less fiction and more real finally being addressed.
A beautiful story of love between Adrain and Jake. How they were there for each other. A story that was well written with characters that was loving, and giving. A wonderful story. I enjoyed it.
I wasn't sure what type of story I was going to read, but I can say I was very impressed with the depth and skill that Boye showed in handling this difficult subject matter. Boye has definitely done some major research and this book really shines in this regard. The prose is excellent, and the plot doesn't always go where you think a typical cancer novel would (yes, there are many typical cancer novels out there). In this area, Boye excels, I believe, breathing life into his characters and really capturing the emotions, heartaches, and struggles of his main characters.

I've known Kody for a few years now, and I've enjoyed watching him grow in his writing skills with each new release and this book is no exception.
Through the happiness,, sadness, joy, sorrow; through health and illness, life and death, the good times and bad.. Through it all they had each other, they grew stronger and loved more,, through it all they always had each other...That is the meaning of life..
I would personally like to thank K.J. Boye forsuch an amazing book
It's an ok read - no really my style and I did not finish it. I got bored. It may appeal to some readers. Just not me.
I have a mixed reaction to this book
- Both Jake and Adrian are HIV positive, but neither seems to want to go to the doctor. (Aren't HIV meds prescribed? How do they get prescriptions without occasional visits to the MD?) HIV status seems to have little bearing on the rest of the book, other than both Jake and Adrian get to tell their stories of past relationships and how they got the virus.
- Doesn't Jake's HIV status have an impact on his desire to be a nurse? With syringes and sharp implements?
- Jake has many apocalyptic dreams/nightmares. I found this religious aspect to be very odd. I had to skip over large sections of the nightmares, because that didn't speak to me.

It seems that the general practitioner is in a wheelchair, but there isn't a big deal made of it. I liked that matter-of-factness, because the doctor's ability to walk or not has no bearing on his ability to diagnose, treat, or counsel his patients.

I felt that there is a solid story at the core of this book. But the author kept throwing ideas at the core, layering on too much, perhaps out of a fear that this is the only m/m romance book he will ever get to write, so put it all in now on his one chance?

I hope that when K.J. Boye writes another m/m romance, he will pare down the many ideas to feature one or two. And save some up for the book after.
